Concept Implementation ::
I joined Ingenta during the embryonic stages of their Portal and Community Environments (PCE)
concept. I took some preliminary documentation and a small initial customer list, and
created a working prototype which led to successful strategic partnerships with CABI,
Heinemann, OECD and others.
Team Building ::
I then put together a team of empowered developers to work with me on the creation,
configuration and deployment of further sites. We developed a standard toolkit
for deployments, documentation and working practises for processing sales.
Client-facing Technical Consultation ::
Dealing directly with the customers of each of these portal sites, I worked alongside
Project Management and Sales to provide a technical-and implementation-focused
response to requirements. I successfully implemented new processes and was involved
from inception to completion for all Ingenta's PCE partnerships.
Engineering Management ::
I later moved on to run a team of dedicated software engineers developing and extending
Ingenta's strategic partnership with Macmillan. I managed the building of a their (then)
two flagship encyclopedia sites (The ELS
& The EAA). Despite rapidly changing internal
and market forces, these sites were successfully hosted on Ingenta's infrastructure for
around two years.
Project Management ::
Following Ingenta's purchase of its largest competitor in the online scholarly publishing
market (CatchWord Ltd), I was assigned to oversee the integration of CatchWord's technology
and functionality with Ingenta's flagship aggregation website. The integration of the
functionality from the two sites resulted in the recently released
IngentaConnect site.
Product-led Development ::
I worked with Ingenta's senior management group to ascertain which components of the
CatchWord service were vital to retaining customer loyalty. This was completed alongside
maintaining and supporting change requests from current and new strategic customers such
as The World Bank.
Client-specific Deployment ::
in October 2004, I joined the development of Ingenta's newest offering; an Information
Commerce System (ICS) which allows customer-side administrators to quickly reconfigure product
bundles to adjust to rapidly changing user behaviour. Running as a startup, the ICS group has
successfully delivered an ICS to the Institute of Physics.
This customer specific implementation is envisaged as the first of many deployments.
